Think about the people in your plan
If you have children under 18, think about who could care for them. Read about guardians before choosing. Parental responsibility and court orders can affect when an appointment takes effect.
List what you own and owe
Not everything passes under a will. Joint ownership, pensions and some insurance arrangements have their own rules. Ask the provider or a solicitor if you are unsure.
Write down questions for advice
Flag any children from an earlier relationship, an unmarried partner, property abroad, a business or a possible dispute. Also note a wish to leave someone out or support someone who cannot manage money alone.
Do not try to draft a trust or complex condition from a short checklist. A solicitor can help you explore the options.
