Lasting Power of Attorney
A lasting power of attorney needs to be registered before an attorney can make decisions under it. GOV.UK states that it takes 8 to 10 weeks to make an LPA if there are no mistakes in the application, and that applying to register an LPA costs £92 unless you get a reduction or exemption.
Property and finance
Covers money, bills, benefits, pensions, bank accounts and property. It can be used as soon as it is registered, with the donor’s permission.
Health and welfare
Covers care, daily routine, medical care and life-sustaining treatment decisions. It can only be used when the donor cannot make the decision themselves.
