LPA fees and registration time

What you pay

The government fee is £92 for one LPA or £184 for both types. These are registration fees paid to the Office of the Public Guardian, known as OPG. Fees and timing checked against GOV.UK on 29 October 2026.

Some people can pay less or nothing. Check help with LPA fees before paying the full amount.

These LPA rules apply in England and Wales. Find the right power of attorney route for Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Check any other charges

You can prepare the forms through GOV.UK without a preparation-service fee. A solicitor or paid service may charge to help you prepare them.

Ask for a clear total. Check whether it includes one or both LPA types, document review and help with signing. Ask about any extra charge for changes, copies or storage. Do not assume the government registration fee is included.

How long registration takes

GOV.UK gives a time of 8 to 10 weeks if there are no mistakes. This is an estimate, not a promise about your application. Check the official page again when you apply.

Allow time before that to choose people, discuss your wishes and collect the signatures. You do not need to wait until the LPA is needed before registering it. It cannot be used before registration.

Reduce avoidable delays

• Use full names and check details across every section.
• Check that the certificate provider and witnesses can take those roles.
• Follow the correct signing order.
• Include required forms, evidence and payment.
• Follow the instructions for any people you chose to notify.

If OPG returns an application, follow its letter. Some errors may qualify for a reduced repeat-application fee within a set time. Do not assume every error has the same remedy.
