Plan the practical side
Allow time for the LPA to be checked and registered.
An LPA cannot be used until it has been registered. Small mistakes can slow the process down.
£92 for each LPAGOV.UK currently lists a separate registration fee for each document.
8 to 10 weeksThis is the stated registration time when there are no mistakes.
Could you pay less? Some people can apply for a reduction or exemption.
Making both types?
A health and welfare LPA and a property and financial affairs LPA are separate. At the current fee, registering both would normally mean two fees.
What can cause a delay?
- Missing or inconsistent details
- Signatures or dates in the wrong order
- A certificate provider who cannot take the role
- Problems with witness details
- Someone raising an objection
Why is it better not to wait?
Registration takes time, and the donor must have mental capacity when making the LPA. Planning while life is settled gives everyone more time to understand the choices.
