Executors and beneficiaries
An executor is the person named in a will to deal with the estate after death. Choosing executors is a practical decision, not just an honorary one. The role can involve paperwork, tax, probate, collecting assets, paying debts and distributing the estate.
Beneficiaries should not be used as witnesses to a will in England and Wales. GOV.UK says a witness, or the witness’s married partner, cannot receive anything left to them in the will.
Use a solicitor if there is likely to be conflict, vulnerable beneficiaries, blended families, overseas assets, trusts, business assets or inheritance tax planning.
